You would think that the news cycle has moved on over the Easter weekend. But guess what, people are still writing about the United incident.
you must be in some deep hole if you had not read or even hear about this.
This incident just reaffirmed my point about how damaged the Internet is and why we don’t deserve nice things. Of course, this is broadly generalised.
The thing is this; I don’t blame the officer who dragged the passenger off. I don’t blame the crew. I don’t blame the airline. I don’t blame the poor doctor. Honestly, the whole thing in my perspective was just blown out of proportion simply because of the Internet and the speed of communication and news. It’s so easy to make judgement and comment so quickly. You don’t even need the whole story to start blaming someone.
I ask a lot of questions, and with this questions, I inevitably wonder why these people made these choices? First, let’s start with United themselves.
Someone must have screwed up. Well, someone must have messed up bad in their operation planning to need to fly four crew to someone else to prevent another flight from being cancelled. Now, this person who is probably panicking could have chosen a million way to get this four crew there, but well decided to bump someone off a boarding flight. This person must be beating himself up now. But well, no one cares about him.
So the flight crew messed up. Their convincing skills sucks and couldn’t get enough passenger to volunteer to take the next flight out. Well, that’s why they have to call airport security. Now, these guys screwed up big time! They got a job to do, and they got to fulfil it.
Then our “poor” doctor. He must have been subjected to horrible racism working in the US where Asians got no stand or say. So when he was selected to be bumped off, he screams the hell no. He struggles when grab, shouting no, offered to be killed, and get all bloody, so that he can stay on this flight. OH COME ON! Get real, if you are bumped, you are bumped. It’s your bloody choice to be as ass to struggle like a little boy, and now you want to sue the airlines? It’s like I can’t get my coke cause they only have zero left, and I refused such absurdity and started making myself difficult and when the enforcement come, decided that I am still the king of my seat and continue fighting.
Then, of course, there this group of people that is trying to prove the legality of the whole thing, citing United own terms, so on and so fore. Oh, and of course, the point that just because you are a “paying” customer, you have to right to everything.
I don’t know if it’s right for me to say this, but this generation is indeed entitled. Honestly, pretty much everyone in this generation who understands and knows how to abuse the Internet and whom so strongly believe in the freedom of speech vs. speaking responsibly.
At the end of the day, it’s all about choices.
A business can refuse and refund a rude customer. I am not saying that the doctor is rude here, but that’s a fact in life! We cannot expect everything always to go our way. We cannot deem ourselves as individual constantly deserving privileges, and most importantly, we cannot always expect special treatment. All the more, we cannot always be expecting special treatment just because we paid for it. And really, don’t bring racism into the picture of any argument from the onset, it just throws people off a constructive disagreement. Racism, sexism, discrimination, yes I know they are real, but I do think they are a topic for another day.
Yes, you use cash to exchange for a service or goods, and you expect them to come in good proper working order. Yes, it’s alright to be frustrated and maybe angry if things don’t work out the way you expected it to. But, No, the Internet is NOT the solution to solving your problem. Your representative in the government is NOT your solution to your problem.
Either way, me think we are pretty screwed.
